The majority of seals were measured in the field by Inuit hunters who recorded date of kill, sex and blubber depth at sternum (0.5 cm). The data from the harvested animals are used to evaluate stressors and overall seal health, in the Canadian Arctic. Depuis 1980, Pêches et Océans Canada et Environnement et Changement climatique Canada (Programme de lutte contre les contaminants dans le Nord) collaborent régulièrement avec les associations communautaires de chasseurs et de trappeurs du Nunavut et le Conseil de gestion des ressources fauniques du Nunavut pour prélever des échantillons de phoques annelés abattus. La majorité des phoques ont été mesurés sur le terrain par des chasseurs inuits qui ont enregistré la date de la prise, le sexe et l’épaisseur du lard au niveau du sternum (0,5 cm). Les données provenant des animaux abattus sont utilisées pour évaluer les facteurs de stress et la santé générale de la population de phoques dans l’Arctique canadien.
