It is developed within the framework of Canada’s National Terrestrial Ecosystem Monitoring System (NTEMS). The SBFI polygons represent homogeneous forest conditions akin to those of stands delineated in a strategic forest inventory. Over 25 million SBFI polygons were delineated using a multiresolution segmentation algorithm applied to the 2020 Landsat surface-reflectance BAP image composite (30-m spatial resolution), fire year, and harvest year layers derived from Landsat with the C2C approach. A minimum map unit of 0.45 ha (5 pixels) was used to define polygons. The entirety of Canada's forest ecosystems were mapped using the same data, attributes, and temporal representation, resulting in a common vegetation inventory system of Canada's ~650 Mha forested ecosystems. Given the large and diverse forest area of Canada, the strength of an SBFI lies in its use of a consistent data source and methodology across jurisdictional boundaries, and across managed and unmanaged forest areas, enabling consistently generated synoptic, spatially explicit information outputs. The data included herein are based upon free and open satellite data and information products following established and communicated approaches. Inventaire forestier par satellite (IFS) fournissant des renseignements sur la couverture forestière du Canada, le rétablissement après perturbation, la structure, les espèces et l’âge des forêts en 2020, ainsi que sur les perturbations ayant entraîné le remplacement des peuplements entre 1985 et 2020, et développé dans le cadre du Canada’s National Terrestrial Ecosystem Monitoring System (NTEMS). Les polygones de l'IFS représentent des conditions forestières homogènes semblables à celles des peuplements établis dans un inventaire forestier stratégique. On a délimité plus de 25 millions de polygones dans l'IFS en appliquant un algorithme de segmentation multirésolution aux couches d'images composites Landsat du meilleur pixel disponible de 2020 basées sur la réflectance de surface (résolution spatiale de 30 m), des années de feu et des années de récolte dérivées du Landsat à l'aide de l'approche C2C. On a utilisé une unité cartographique minimale de 0,45 ha (5 pixels) pour les définir. On a cartographié la totalité des écosystèmes forestiers du Canada à l'aide des mêmes données, attributs et représentation temporelle, créant ainsi un système d'inventaire de la végétation commun pour l'ensemble des quelque 650 Mha d'écosystèmes forestiers au pays. Étant donné la taille et la diversité des zones forestières nationales, la force d'un IFS réside dans son utilisation d'une méthode et d'une source de données uniformes des deux côtés des frontières entre les provinces et les territoires, et pour les zones forestières gérées et non gérées, ce qui permet une production uniforme d'extrants informatifs synoptiques et spatialement explicites. Les données comprises dans l'ensemble reposent sur des produits d'information et des données satellites à l'accès libre et gratuit qui respectent les approches établies et communiquées.
