The PIERs’ main mandate is to acquire and update biological sensitivity data under its jurisdiction for preparation and response purposes in the event of an oil spill. This dataset contains all observations of marine organisms noted during the analysis of 2959 underwater images sampled over a large extent of the coastal zone (≤10 m) of the Estuary and the Gulf of St. Lawrence (Quebec region). The dataset includes 21 490 occurrences of 150 taxa and informal categories including macroalgae, invertebrates and fish. Underwater images were collected between 2017 and 2021 according to a directed sampling protocol whose primary goal was to map large seaweed and eelgrass beds. Images were normally recorded as videos using a GoPro Hero camera installed on a pole and placed near the seabed from a small boat. The collected data served primarily as ground-truth data to validate coasting zone mapping based on aerial photographs within the framework of the PIER's initiative. The two files provided (DarwinCore format) are complementary and are linked by the "eventID" key. The "event_information" file includes generic event information, including date and location. The "taxon_occurrence" file includes the original identifiers of the observed organisms (verbatimIdentification field), identification remarks and their taxonomy. Taxonomic names were verified on the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) to match recognized standards. The WoRMS match has been put in the scientificNameID field in the occurrence file. Data quality control was performed using the R packages obistools and worrms. All sampling locations were plotted on a map to perform a visual check confirming that the latitude and longitude coordinates were within the described sampling area. A visual dictionary was developed as an identification aid and accompanies this dataset (unilingual french only, the English version will be published soon). More data, including a visibility index, estimated macroalgae and eelgrass cover, substrate type and dominant macroalgae and animals were recorded but not included in this dataset. L’initiative « Planification pour une intervention environnementale intégrée » (PIEI) est sous l’égide du Plan de Protection des Océans (PPO) du gouvernement du Canada, programme qui vise à préserver les écosystèmes marins vulnérables à l’augmentation du transport et du développement de l’industrie maritime. L’initiative de la PIEI a comme principal mandat de mettre à jour et de compléter les informations sur les sensibilités biologiques sous sa juridiction pour la préparation et l’intervention advenant un déversement d’hydrocarbures. Ce jeu de données contient toutes les observations d’organismes marins notées lors de l’analyse de 2959 images sous-marines échantillonnées sur une large étendue de la zone côtière (≤10 m) de l’estuaire et du golfe du Saint-Laurent (région du Québec). Le jeu de données comprend 21 490 occurrences de 150 taxons et catégories informelles, incluant des macroalgues, des invertébrés et des poissons. Les images sous-marines ont été recueillies entre 2017 et 2021, selon un protocole d’échantillonnage dirigé dont le but premier était de cartographier les grands bancs d’algues et les zostéraies. Les images étaient normalement enregistrées sous forme de vidéos à l’aide d’une caméra GoPro Hero installée sur une perche et placée près du fond marin à partir d’une petite embarcation. Les données collectées ont principalement servi de données de validation pour la cartographie des zones côtières basée sur des photographies aériennes, dans le cadre de l’initiative de la PIEI. Les deux fichiers fournis (format DarwinCore) sont complémentaires et sont reliés par la clé « IDactivité ». Le fichier «information_activité» comprend les informations génériques de l'activité, notamment la date et la localisation. Le fichier «occurrence_taxon» comprend les identifiants originaux des organismes observés (champ identificationVerbatim), des commentaires d’identification puis leur taxonomie. Tous les noms taxonomiques ont été vérifiés sur le registre mondial des espèces marines (WoRMS) pour correspondre aux normes reconnues. La correspondance WoRMS a été placée dans le champ IDnomScientifique du fichier d’occurrence. Le contrôle de la qualité des données a été effectué à l’aide des bibliothèques R obistools et worrms. Tous les emplacements d’échantillonnage ont été reportés sur une carte afin d’effectuer un contrôle visuel confirmant que les coordonnées de latitude et de longitude se trouvaient dans la zone d’échantillonnage décrite. Un dictionnaire visuel a été développé comme aide à l’identification et accompagne cet ensemble de données (unilingue français seulement, la version anglaise sera publiée prochainement). D’autres données, notamment un indice de visibilité, une estimation de la couverture de macroalgues et de zostère, le type de substrat et les macroalgues et animaux dominants ont été enregistrés, mais ne sont pas inclus dans ce jeu de données.
