The main goal of the survey is to generate reliable indices for trends of all waterfowl species with similar breeding phenology nesting within the Québec lowlands, i.e. annual indices should provide estimates of the population with a coefficient of variation (CV) of 10%, and population trend should detect a 10% decline over a period of 5 years with 90% confidence. A more specific goal is to monitor relative trends of American Black Duck and Mallard, given their competition for habitat in this region of Québec. Le Suivi des basses-terres du Québec, mené par le Service canadien de la faune, est réalisé au moyen d’hélicoptères pour effectuer chaque année un relevé de la sauvagine nicheuse dans des parcelles de 2x2 km (4 km²) situées dans trois secteurs de basses-terres du sud du Québec, soit le Saint-Laurent, le Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean et l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue, dans l’aire de reproduction d’espèces à nidification hâtive comme le Canard noir, le Canard colvert, le Bernache du Canada et le Canard branchu. L'objectif principal du le suivi est de produire des indices fiables sur les tendances de toutes les espèces de sauvagine présentant une phénologie de reproduction similaire et nichant dans les basses terres du Québec; c'est-à-dire que les indices annuels devraient fournir des estimations de la population avec un coefficient de variation de 10 %, et que l'évolution de la population devrait permettre de détecter une baisse de 10 % sur une période de 5 ans avec un niveau de confiance de 90 %. Un objectif plus spécifique consiste à suivre les tendances relatives du Canard noir et du Canard colvert, compte tenu de leur compétivité pour l’habitat dans cette région du Québec.
