La production primaire correspond notamment aux floraisons d'algues microscopiques, le phytoplancton, une ressource alimentaire à la base de la chaîne alimentaire des écosystèmes marins. La connaissance de ces zones peut servir d'indicateur permettant d'identifier les secteurs du Saint-Laurent où la productivité est supérieure à différentes périodes de l'année. L'atteinte de cette composant peut influencer le reste du cycle biologique dans le secteur affecté. Les données ont été produites à partir du modèle biogéochimique du golfe du Saint-Laurent (GSBM) développé par le Dr. Diane Lavoie. Ce modèle permet de calculer, à l'aide de 10 variables, la production primaire dans chacune des cellules de la grille du modèle. Ce calcul a été fait à une résolution mensuelle et un seuil a été appliqué ensuite aux données pour ne conserver que les cellules où les concentrations estimées dépassaient 20 mg C/m-2. Ce niveau de production primaire est considéré comme élevé. Information additionnelle Moyenne de la production primaire mensuelle (mg C m-2) dans les 50 premiers mètres de la surface simulée avec le modèle numérique tri-dimensionnel CANOPA-GSBM sur une période de 13 ans (1998-2010). Le modèle biogéochimique GSBM, couplé au modèle de circulation régionale CANOPA, a été utilisé pour produire la couche de Chl a. La grille du modèle a une maille de 1/12° horizontalement (environ 6 x 8 km), 46 couches sur la verticale et couvre les régions du Golfe du Saint-Laurent, du plateau néo-écossais et du Golfe du Maine. La résolution verticale est variable (entre 6 m près de la surface et 90 m aux profondeurs d’environ 500 m). Ce modèle inclut le forçage dû aux marées et à l’apport en eau douce du fleuve Saint-Laurent et des nombreuses rivières de la région, ainsi que le forçage atmosphérique (température, vents, etc..) produit par un modèle indépendant (National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Climate Forecast System Version 2). De plus, le modèle de circulation est couplé à un modèle de glace marine reproduisant la saisonnalité du couvert de glace dans la région. Le modèle biogéochimique du golfe du Saint-Laurent (GSBM) simule les cycles biogéochimiques de l'oxygène, du carbone et de l'azote et les composants biologiques qui déterminent la dynamique de l'écosystème planctonique. Le modèle comporte 10 variables d'état. Le modèle NPZD (nutriments, production primaire, zooplancton, détritus) comprend à la fois des chaînes alimentaires herbivores et microbiennes simplifiées, typiques des conditions de floraison et de post-floraison. L'exportation de matière biogène en profondeur est médiée par le réseau herbivore (nitrate, grand phytoplancton (diatomées), mésozooplancton, matière organique particulaire), tandis que la boucle microbienne (ammonium, petit phytoplancton, microzooplancton, matière organique dissoute) est principalement responsable du recyclage des éléments nutritifs dans la zone euphotique. Le Nitrate est également fourni par les rivières. Le couplage étroit entre la croissance du petit phytoplancton et le broutage du microzooplancton, la libération d'azote autochtone et la réminéralisation de l'azote organique dissous (NOD) en ammonium (NH4+) sont utilisés pour représenter la dynamique de la boucle microbienne. Les fonctions de transfert biologique proviennent d'un grand nombre de formulations utilisant les paramètres moyens trouvés dans la littérature. Les variables biologiques sont calculées dans les unités d'azote et la biomasse d'algues et la production convertie en unités de Chl a et carbone en utilisant des rapports stoechiométriques fixes. L'azote organique particulaire (NOP) détérioré est fragmenté en azote organique dissous (NOD) alors qu'il sédimente vers le fond. La simulation a été réalisée pour une partie de la période couvrant le programme de monitorage de la Zone Atlantique (PMZA), soit de 1998 jusqu’à 2010. This layer represents areas where primary production is considered to be high. Primary production includes microscopic algal blooms, named phytoplankton, a food resource at the base of the food web of marine ecosystems. The knowledge of these zones can serve as a proxy to identify areas of the St. Lawrence where productivity is higher at different times of the year. Impacting his component may influence the rest of the life cycle in the affected area. Data were generated from the Gulf of St. Lawrence Biogeochemical Model (GSBM) developed by Dr. Diane Lavoie. This model makes it possible to calculate, using 10 variables, the primary production in each cell of the grid of the model. This calculation was done at a monthly resolution and a threshold was then applied to the data to keep only those cells where the estimated concentrations exceeded 20 mg C / m-2. Nitrate is also supplied by rivers. The tight coupling between small phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing, autochtonous nitrogen release and (dissolved organic nitrogen) DON remineralization to ammonium (NH4+) is used to represent the dynamic of the microbial food chain. Biological transfer functions are derived from bulk formulations using mean parameters found in the literature. Biological variables are calculated in nitrogen units and algal biomass and production converted to Chl a and carbon units using fixed stoichiometric ratios. Detrital particulate organic nitrogen (PON) gets fragmented to dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) as it sinks toward the bottom. The phytoplankton growth rate is a function of light and nutrient availability. The available light for phytoplankton growth is a function of sea-ice cover, Chl a and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM). The GSBM biogeochemical model, coupled with the CANOPA regional circulation model, was used to produce the Chl a layer. The grid of the model is 1/12° horizontally (about 6 x 8 km), 46 layers vertical and covers the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Scotian Shelf and Gulf of Maine regions. The vertical resolution is variable (between 6 m close to the surface to 90 m at depths of about 500 m). This model includes tidal forcing and the freshwater supply of the St. Lawrence River and the many rivers in the region, as well as atmospheric forcing (temperature, wind, etc.) produced by an independent model (National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Climate Forecast System Version 2). In addition, the circulation model is coupled with a model of sea ice that reproduces the seasonality of the ice cover in the region. The temperature and salinity fields are produced freely by the model and only constrained by monthly climatologies of these conditions at the boundaries of the model domain.
