Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has been tasked, under the Marine Conservation Targets (MCT) initiative announced in Budget 2016, with evaluating the petroleum resource potential for areas identified for possible protection as part of the Government of Canada's commitment to conserve 10% of its marine areas by 2020. As part of this initiative, NRCan's Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) conducted a broad regional study of the petroleum potential over the majority of the Magdalen Basin, which is the principal geological basin in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence. The GSC resource assessment is visually represented by a qualitative petroleum potential map. Disclaimer: A simplified colored version of the map is displayed on the Web Mapping Service (WMS). The correct version is available for download through the Federal Geospatial Platform (FGP) and GEOSCAN. Dans le cadre de l'initiative des cibles de conservation marine annoncée dans le budget de 2016, Ressources naturelles Canada (RNCan) a été chargé d'évaluer le potentiel de ressources pétrolières des zones qui éventuellement pourraient être protégées dans le cadre de l'engagement du gouvernement du Canada de conserver 10 % de ses aires marines d'ici 2020. Dans le cadre de ce projet, la Commission géologique du Canada (CGC) de RNCan a mené une vaste étude régionale du potentiel pétrolier sur la majeure partie du bassin de la Madeleine, qui est le principal bassin géologique du sud du golfe du Saint-Laurent. L'évaluation des ressources par la CGC est représentée visuellement par une carte qualitative du potentiel pétrolier. Its primary purpose was to expedite creation of petroleum resource summary reports required to be supplied by NRCan to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) or Parks Canada (PCA) as part of their process to environmentally protect areas of Canada's marine and coastal waters. It is innovative in that it produces a spatial overlay representing relative levels of hydrocarbon discovery success with a subjective volume estimate (qualitative), rather than predicting volumes of potentially discoverable petroleum (quantitative), which is ideal, but time consuming. The method keeps results comparable when used across different geographic areas and is the current standard for qualitative-type petroleum resource assessments done by the GSC for DFO and PCA. It allows for efficient expansion into quantitative petroleum estimates, if and when needed. Ce rapport décrit une méthode probabiliste systématique fondée sur des pratiques scientifiques reconnues qui sert à inférer des ressources pétrolières non découvertes. Son objectif principal était d'accélérer la production de rapports sommaires sur les ressources pétrolières que RNCan devait fournir au ministère des Pêches et des Océans (MPO) ou à Parcs Canada dans le cadre de leur processus de protection environnementale des zones marines et côtières du Canada. Il est novateur en ce qu'il produit une couche spatiale représentant les niveaux relatifs de succès de la découverte d'hydrocarbures avec une estimation de volume subjective (qualitative), plutôt que de prédire des volumes de pétrole potentiellement détectables (quantitatifs), ce qui serait idéal mais prend beaucoup de temps. Cette méthode conserve des résultats comparables lorsqu'elle est utilisée dans différentes régions géographiques et elle constitue la norme actuelle pour les évaluations des ressources pétrolières de type qualitatif effectuées par la CGC pour le MPO et Parcs Canada.
