Les cartes ont été produites à partir de différents produits de télédétection. Nous avons utilisé des données d'attributs forestiers à une résolution de 250 m MODIS pour les années 2001 et 2011 (Beaudoin et al. 2014 et 2018) jumelées aux changements de couvertures forestières pour les années 1985 à 2015 contenus dans le jeu de données CanLaD à 30 m Landsat (Guindon et al. 2017 et 2018). Les résultats de la biomasse disponible (sous forme de résidus forestiers) ont été mis à l'échelle de 10 km x 10 km tandis que la carte des forêts matures au Canada a été réalisée à l’échelle de l’unité d’aménagement forestier (UAF). Brièvement, notre méthodologie était constituée de trois étapes: 1- créer une carte des forêts matures pour l'année 2011, basée sur les volumes moyens coupés par UAF entre 2001 et 2010; 2- développer un taux de coupe annuel à partir des surfaces récoltées de 1985 à 2015 à l’intérieur des UAFs et; 3- définir la quantité de biomasse sous forme de résidus forestiers disponibles pour le secteur de la bioénergie. La biomasse des branches et des feuilles provenant des données d'attributs forestiers a été utilisée pour évaluer approximativement la biomasse des résidus forestiers disponibles. À l’échelle nationale, la biomasse moyenne de résidus forestiers disponibles après coupe s’élève à 26 ± 16 t.a./ha, alors que la disponibilité annuelle totale pour l’ensemble des forêts aménagées au Canada était de 21 M t.a./an. The maps were produced using different remote sensing products. We used forest attribute data at 250 m MODIS for the years 2001 and 2011 (Beaudoin et al. 2014 and 2018) combined with forest cover changes for the years 1985 to 2015 contained in the CanLaD dataset at 30 m Landsat(Guindon et al. 2017 and 2018). Results of available biomass (in the form of harvest residues) were reported at the 10 km x 10 km scale, while the map of mature forests in Canada was prepared at the forest management unit (FMU) level. Briefly, our methodology consisted of three steps: 1- create a map of mature forests for the year 2011, based on 2001-2010 average cut volumes within FMUs; 2- develop an annual cut rate from the area harvested within FMUs from 1985 to 2015 and; 3- define the amount of biomass in the form of forest residues available for the bioenergy sector. The biomass of branches and leaves of forest attribute data was used as a proxy to define the biomass of forest residues available. Nationally, the average biomass of forest residues available after harvest is 26 ± 16 ODT/ha, while the total annual availability for all managed forests in Canada was 21 million ODT/yr. These maps were developed to cover the area of managed forests in Canada, which covers more than 2 million km2. The remote sensing products used in this data publication are appropriate for large-scale strategic forest assessments and can serve as a basis for policy decisions. The map of mature forests in Canada can serve as a reference for further research or to answer some questions about sustainable forest management in Canada. The national forest residue availability map is critical to the development of the bioeconomy sector in Canada.
