Le krill est une ressource alimentaire importante pour de nombreux mammifères marins dont la baleine bleue. Les cartes présentent les endroits où il y a une forte concentration de krill par mois de avril à novembre. Chaque point représente un nombre d'années de forte probabilité d'agrégation (6 à 10 ans). Les données ont été produites à partir d'un modèle mathématique développé dans Plourde et al. 2016. Le modèle a permis de calculer la probabilité de rencontrer une forte agrégation de krill sur une période de 10 années. Les fortes agrégations de krill sont définies par le 95e percentile de la biomasse prédite dans des cellules de 10 x 10 km couvrant l'estuaire et le golfe du Saint-Laurent. Les données sont incomplètes en amont de Pointe-des-Monts à cause du manque de couverture spatiale des anomalies de hauteur d’eau (variable servant à prédire les agrégations de krill). Un moins grand nombre d'années de forte agrégation de krill est donc représenté, mais cela ne doit pas être interprété comme une zone moins favorable à ce qui se trouve juste à l’est de Pointe-des-Monts. Krill is a generic name for crustaceans of the order Euphausiids, most of which are known to be Thysanoessa raschii and Meganyctiphanes norvegica in eastern Canada. Krill is an important food resource for many marine mammals, in particular the blue whale. The maps show the points of high krill concentration per month from April to November. Each point gives the number of years of high aggregation probability (6 to 10 years). The data were produced from a mathematical model developed in Plourde et al. 2016. The model has allowed to calculate the probability of meeting a strong aggregation of krill over a period of 10 years. High krill aggregations are defined as the 95th percentile of predicted biomass in 10 x 10 km cells covering the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence.
