Description of activity: The research is a survey of the Hotwater physa, Physella wrighti, to estimate population distribution and abundance, in order to monitor the population of this freshwater snail found in a single hot spring site in Canada. Researchers will gather data regarding the density of snail populations and the characteristics of the habitat it utilizes in order to provide an updated assessment of its status. The proposed methodology allows accurate, monitoring of this population. Estimates of snail density per square meter will be calculated based on repeated sweeps of vegetation to dislodge snails. Where snails are found on open substrate, counts are done by quadrat. Attempts will be made to document egg case deposition. Population density estimates and ecosystem data will be sampled for every meter of stream where P. wrighti is known to occur. Each sample site will be georeferenced and documented using digital photography. Relevé pour le Physella wrighti - de la physe d’eau chaude, à Liard River Hotsprings Provincial Park, Août 2006. Description de l’activité: La présente recherche consiste à effectuer un relevé de la physe d’eau chaude, Physella wrighti, afin d’estimer sa répartition et son abondance. Ce relevé nous permettra de suivre l’évolution de la population de cet escargot d’eau douce, qu’on trouve dans une unique source thermale au Canada. Les chercheurs recueilleront des données sur la densité de la population d’escargots et sur les caractéristiques de son habitat, ce qui leur permettra d’établir une évaluation à jour de sa situation. La méthode proposée permettra d’effectuer un suivi précis de cette population. Les estimations de la densité d’escargots par mètre carré seront établies par des passages répétés sur les charas. Lorsque les escargots se trouveront sur un substrat à découvert, leur dénombrement sera effectué par quadrat. Les chercheurs tenteront également de relever la présence de sacs ovigères. On établira des estimations de la densité de la population et on recueillera des données sur l’écosystème à tous les mètres sur un tronçon de ruisseau où l’occurrence de P. wrighti est connue.
