Determining the feasibility of a large-scale afforestation program is one approach being investigated by the Government of Canada to increase Canada's potential to sequester carbon from the atmosphere and/or produce bioproducts and bioenergy. Large-scale afforestation, however, requires knowledge of where it is suitable to establish and grow trees. Spatial models based on Boolean logic and/or statistical models within a geographic information system may be used for this purpose, but empirical environmental data are often lacking, and the association of these data to land suitability is most often a subjective process. As a solution to this problem, a fuzzy-logic modeling approach to assess site suitability for afforestation of hybrid poplar (Populus spp.) and willow (Salix spp.) in Canada was developed. Expert knowledge regarding the selection and magnitudes of environmental variables were integrated into fuzzy rule sets from which estimates of site suitability were generated and spatially presented. The environmental variables selected included growing season precipitation, climate moisture index, growing degree days, the Canada Land Inventory capability for agriculture and elevation. Site suitability is generally defined as the fitness of a given type of land for a particular use. For this assessment, site suitability was defined as the fitness of edaphic, climatic and topographic conditions to establish and grow SRWC species at rates 8 times those of native species. Suitability index values range from 1-100, with higher values corresponding to higher suitability. Approximately 246,000 km2, or 38% of the eligible land base within Canada was found to be suitable for afforestation using Short Rotation Woody Crops (SRWC) of hybrid poplar and/or willow. Ces données indiquent l’adéquation d’un site pour la mise en place de taillis en courte rotation de saule sur des terres propices (c.-à-d., non boisées) au boisement dans l’ensemble du Canada. La détermination de la faisabilité d’un programme de boisement à grande échelle constitue l’une des approches qu’examine le gouvernement du Canada afin d’accroître le potentiel du pays à piéger le carbone présent dans l’atmosphère ou à produire des bioproduits et de la bioénergie. Cependant, le boisement à grande échelle exige des connaissances sur les endroits adéquats où établir et faire croître des arbres. On peut utiliser à cette fin des modèles spatiaux reposant sur la logique booléenne ou des modèles statistiques au sein d’un système d’information géographique, mais il manque souvent des données environnementales empiriques, et l’association de ces données à l’adéquation d’un terrain constitue le plus souvent un processus subjectif. Afin de remédier à ce problème, on a mis au point au Canada une approche de modélisation à logique floue afin d’évaluer si un site convient pour un boisement de peuplier hybride (Populus spp.) ou de saule (Salix spp.). Les connaissances approfondies concernant le choix et l’ampleur des variables environnementales ont été intégrées aux ensembles de règles floues à partir desquels les estimations sur l’adéquation d’un site ont été produites et présentées spatialement. Les variables environnementales sélectionnées comprenaient les précipitations pendant la saison de croissance, l’indice d’humidité climatique, les degrés-jours de croissance, la capacité des terres pour l’agriculture et l’élévation selon l’Inventaire des terres du Canada. L’adéquation d’un site est généralement définie comme étant l’aptitude d’un type de terrain donné à convenir pour une utilisation en particulier. Pour cette évaluation, l’adéquation d’un site a été définie comme étant l’aptitude des conditions édaphiques (c.-à-d., du sol), climatiques et topographiques en vue de planter et de faire croître des essences de taillis en courte rotation à des taux 8 fois supérieurs à ceux des essences indigènes.
