La couche contient une synthèse des données géologiques et géochimiques récoltées et interprétées à partir de différentes études réalisées sur une période de 10 ans et est accompagnée par des cartes détaillées de bathymétrie et de sédiments de surface. L’essentiel de cette étude porte sur la géomorphologie, les sédiments de surface (lithologie, minéralogie et chimie), ainsi que sur les conditions de dépôt présentes à l’époque, mais plusieurs informations ont également été récoltées sur la géologie du substrat rocheux et sur la stratigraphie des sédiments meubles. Objectif Ces études de reconnaissance à l’échelle régionale ont été conduites avec l’objectif d’obtenir des données acoustiques et d'échantillonnage sur la morphologie et les propriétés de base des sédiments pour l'ensemble du Golfe. Cette approche a été utilisée de façon à fournir une évaluation large de l'environnement sédimentaire du Golfe et de son histoire glaciaire et postglaciaire. Les données acoustiques et d'échantillonnage pour le fleuve et le golfe du Saint-Laurent ont été obtenues à bord de différents bateaux au fil des ans. Les lignes de sondage et les stations d’échantillonnage ont été initialement sélectionnées en fonction de la morphologie sous-marine et par la suite en combinaison avec une carte sédimentologique préliminaire à partir des données de fond de la mer accumulées. Plus spécifiquement, les données acoustiques sur la topographie et la nature du fond de la mer ont été obtenues à partir de l'échosondage et du profilage sismique continu. Les enregistrements ont été étudiés, interprétés et, dans la plupart des cas, réduits manuellement à une échelle appropriée pour le traçage et la présentation. Les informations sur les enregistrements sismiques continus ont en premier lieu été interprétées visuellement et par la suite, réduites à une échelle constante à l’aide d’un pantographe avec des échelles verticale et horizontale indépendantes. De plus, environ 1500 échantillons de sédiments ont été recueillis à divers endroits dans le golfe de façon à obtenir une couverture régionale de l’environnement sédimentaire dans l’aire d’étude. Les échantillons de sédiments ont été triés et divisés après que leur teneur en eau ait été déterminée. Les analyses minéralogiques ont été effectuées après la séparation des sédiments lourds et légers. Les minéraux légers ont été identifiés par un procédé combiné de coloration et d'utilisation de liquides d'immersion. Description of the submarine morphology and characteristics of the sediments (lithology, grain size, mineralogy, and chemistry) of the Saguenay fjord, the lower Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence. The layer contains a synthesis of geological and geochemical data collected and interpreted over 10 years and is accompanied by detailed bathymetric and surface sediment maps. Most of this study deals with the geomorphology, surface sediments (lithology, mineralogy, and chemistry), and present depositional conditions, but several studies have also been made of the bedrock geology and the stratigraphy of the unconsolidated sediments. Purpose These studies are regional and of a reconnaissance nature in the sense that they have been designed to obtain acoustical and sampling data on the morphology and basic properties of the sediments from the whole Gulf. This approach was used to provide a broad appraisal of the sedimentary environment of the Gulf and its late-glacial and postglacial history. Additional Information Unknown date of numeric version. Acoustical and sampling data were obtained in the River and Gulf of St. Lawrence on board of different boats over the years. Sounding lines and sample stations were selected initially on the basis of submarine morphology and later in combination with a preliminary sedimentological map as the sea floor data accumulated. More specifically, acoustical data on the topography and nature of the sea floor was obtained from echosounding and continuous seismic profiling. Sounding records were studied, interpreted, and reduced manually in most cases to a scale suitable for plotting and presentation. The information on the continuous seismic records was first interpreted visually and the reduced to constant scale with the aid of a pantograph with independently vertical and horizontal scales. Also, about 1500 sediments samples have been collected from various parts of the Gulf to obtain a regional coverage of the sedimentary environment in the area. The sediment sample were sorted and split after their water content had been determined. Mineralogical analyses were carried out after separation into a heavy and light fraction.
