For the Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) of Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), this means filling gaps in our knowledge of marine and coastal bird species. In order to identify these gaps for the province of Quebec, we carried out a prioritization exercise in 2022 and concluded that major efforts needed to be made in the Nunavik marine region, since data were lacking in several sectors and for several species. Understanding the vulnerability of wildlife species over time and space will help us, among other things, to assess risks and act quickly and appropriately in the event of incidents affecting the marine environment, such as an oil spill or shipwreck. Another important objective of the Oceans Protection Plan is to implement sustainable partnerships with the Inuit in order to share our respective knowledge of migratory birds, develop joint projects and support Inuit-led marine bird projects. It is in this context that ground surveys of marine bird nests on the islands of Nunavik are being carried out by the CWS, in collaboration with Nunavimmiut. The main objective of these surveys is to update available data on the abundance and distribution of nesting seabirds in this area, particularly Common Eiders (Somateria mollissima). On each island visited, a team follows transects distributed from one end to the other and across the entire width of the island, in order to obtain complete and systematic coverage of the island and to count all the nests present. The spacing between transects can vary according to the size of the island, its topography and the density of nests present. This database provides access to the survey results and shows, for each island surveyed, the number of nests of each species present. In the case of the Black Guillemot (Cepphus grylle), since nests are very difficult to find, it is rather the number of adults present around the island that is reported. Finally, in some cases, notably for gulls (Larus spp.), if no nests were found, but adults were observed on or around the island, then a number of adult individuals was reported. En 2022, le gouvernement fédéral a lancé la deuxième phase du Plan de protection des océans, un vaste programme interministériel visant à bonifier la sécurité maritime au Canada en améliorant notre capacité de prévention et d'intervention en cas d'incidents maritimes. Pour le Service canadien de la faune (SCF) d’Environnement et Changement climatique Canada (ECCC), il s'agit de combler les lacunes dans nos connaissances des espèces d'oiseaux marins et côtiers. Afin d'identifier ces lacunes pour la province de Québec, nous avons effectué un exercice de priorisation en 2022 et avons conclu que des efforts importants devaient être déployés dans la région marine du Nunavik puisque les données manquaient dans plusieurs secteurs et pour plusieurs espèces. Comprendre la vulnérabilité des espèces sauvages dans le temps et dans l'espace nous aidera, entre autres, à évaluer les risques et à agir rapidement et de manière appropriée en cas d'incidents affectant l'environnement marin, tels qu’un déversement d’hydrocarbures ou un naufrage. Un autre objectif important du Plan de protection des océans est de mettre en œuvre des partenariats durables avec les Inuit afin de partager nos connaissances respectives sur les oiseaux migrateurs, de développer des projets conjointement et de soutenir les projets menés par les Inuit sur les oiseaux marins. C’est dans ce contexte que des inventaires au sol des nids d’oiseaux marins sur les îles du Nunavik sont réalisés par le SCF, en collaboration avec des Nunavimmiut. Ces inventaires ont pour objectif principal de mettre à jour les données disponibles sur l’abondance et la répartition des oiseaux marins nicheurs dans ce secteur, particulièrement les Eiders à duvet (Somateria mollissima). Sur chaque île visitée, une équipe parcourt des transects répartis d’une extrémité à l’autre et sur toute la largeur de l’île afin d’avoir une couverture intégrale et systématique de l’île et d’y dénombrer tous les nids présents. L’espacement entre les transects peut varier en fonction de la superficie de l’île, sa topographie et la densité de nids présents. Cette base de données permet donc d’accéder aux résultats d’inventaire et présente, pour chaque île inventoriée, le nombre de nids de chaque espèce présente. Dans le cas du Guillemot à miroir (Cepphus grylle), puisque les nids sont très difficiles à trouver, c'est plutôt le nombre d'adultes présents autour de l'île qui est rapporté.
