The importance of the forest industry to the regional economy can be assessed using the CanEcumene GIS Database. “Ecumene” is a term used by geographers, meaning “inhabited lands.” A forest ecumene refers to areas where human settlement coincides with forested areas, including locations where people depend on the forest for their livelihood. Populated places in the ecumene database are referenced using natural boundaries, as opposed to administrative or census boundaries, and provide a more suitable means for integrating socio-economic data with ecological and environmental data in a region. An analysis of ecumene labour force data and location of mill facilities resulted in a generalized rendering showing regional dependency of the forest industry. The location of mill facilities layer includes information on mill type (i.e., pulp and saw) and ownership. The sensitivity to forest industry layer shows which forest communities and regions are more sensitive to economic impacts in the forest industry. Two layers are provided: the sensitivity of forest communities and regions to forest industry, and the location of mill facilities. L’importance de l’industrie forestière pour l’économie régionale peut être évaluée à l’aide de la Base de Données SIG (système d’information géographique) de l’écoumène forestier canadien. « Écoumène » est un terme employé par les géographes qui signifie « espaces habités ». Un écoumène forestier est une zone dans laquelle les établissements humains coïncident avec des zones forestières, y compris les zones où des gens vivent de la forêt. Dans la base de données sur l’écoumène, les endroits habités sont référencés à l’aide de limites naturelles, par opposition aux limites administratives ou de recensement, constituant ainsi un moyen plus approprié d’intégrer les données socioéconomiques aux données écologiques et environnementales d’une région. Une analyse des données sur la population active de l’écoumène et sur l’emplacement des usines de transformation du bois a permis de créer une représentation visuelle généralisée montrant la dépendance régionale à l’égard de l’industrie forestière. La couche sur l’emplacement des usines de transformation du bois comprend des informations sur le type d’usine (usine de pâte, scierie) et la propriété. La couche sur la sensibilité à l’industrie forestière montre ainsi quelles collectivités et régions forestières sont plus sensibles aux impacts économiques dans l’industrie forestière.
