This method involves separating environmental variables derived from multibeam bathymetry (slope, bathymetric position index), backscatter, and oceanographic information (wave-shear current velocity) into spatial units (i.e. image objects) and classifying the acoustically and oceanographically separated units into 7 habitat classes (Bedrock and Boulders, Mixed Sediments, Gravelly Sand, Sand, Silty Gravel with Anemones, Silt, and Tidal Scoured Mixed Sediments) using in-situ data (imagery). Benthoscape classes (synonymous to landscape classifications in terrestrial ecology) describe the geomorphology and biology of the seafloor and are derived from elements of the seafloor that were acoustically and oceanographically distinguishable. Cette méthode consiste à séparer les variables environnementales issues de la bathymétrie multifaisceaux (pente, indice de position bathymétrique), de la rétrodiffusion et de données océanographiques (vitesse de cisaillement des interactions vagues-courants) en unités spatiales (c.-à-d., objets d’une image), puis à répartir ces unités séparées sur les plans acoustique et océanographique en sept classes d’habitat (substrat et blocs rocheux, sédiments mixtes, sable graveleux, sable, gravier limoneux avec anémones, limon, et sédiments mixtes affouillés par les marées) au moyen de données in situ (imagerie). Les classes de paysage benthique (semblables aux classes de paysage en écologie terrestre) décrivent la géomorphologie et la biologie du fond marin, et découlent d’éléments du fond marin qui peuvent être distingués sur les plans acoustique et océanographique.
