One of the projects identified under the theme of biodiversity conservation is the development of an integrated plan for the conservation of the natural environments and biodiversity of the St. Lawrence River. The identification of priority sites for conservation has been the first step of this planning exercise. Conservation planning of natural environments requires a reliable, accurate and up-to-date image of the spatial distribution of ecosystems in the study area. In order to produce an Atlas of Priority Sites for Conservation in the St. Lawrence Lowlands, an updated cartography of the land cover of this vast territory was undertaken. This project required obtaining reliable information on the natural environments of the St. Lawrence Lowlands. Although several land cover mapping projects have been conducted for specific types of habitats, it was particularly important to obtain a homogeneous product that would cover the entire territory and that would provide the most detailed information on its various thematic components: agricultural, aquatic, human-modified and forest environments, wetlands as well as old fields and bare ground. The methodology used to produce the land cover mapping of the St. Lawrence Lowlands thus relied mainly on combining and enhancing the best existing products for each theme. This project was made in collaboration with MDDELCC as part of the St. Lawrence Action Plan (SLAP). Depuis 1988, les gouvernements du Canada et du Québec travaillent de concert afin de conserver et de mettre en valeur le fleuve Saint-Laurent dans le cadre du Plan d’action Saint-Laurent (PASL). L’un des projets identifiés sous le thème de la conservation de la biodiversité est l’élaboration d’un plan intégré de conservation des milieux naturels et de la biodiversité du Saint-Laurent. L’identification des milieux naturels prioritaires pour la conservation de la biodiversité s’est imposée comme la première étape dans cet exercice de planification. Or, la planification de la conservation des milieux naturels nécessite d’avoir une image juste, fiable, précise et actuelle de la répartition spatiale des écosystèmes dans le territoire d’étude. De façon à produire un Atlas des territoires d’intérêt pour la conservation dans les Basses-terres du Saint-Laurent, la réalisation d’une cartographie actualisée de l’occupation du sol de ce vaste territoire a donc été entreprise. Ce projet a nécessité l’obtention d’informations fiables sur les milieux naturels des Basses-terres du Saint-Laurent. Bien que de nombreux et excellents produits cartographiques existent déjà pour délimiter différents types de milieux, ils recouvrent souvent des régions bien circonscrites et il était donc particulièrement important d’obtenir un produit homogène sur l’ensemble du territoire. Ceci permet du même coup d’obtenir les meilleures informations sur ses différentes composantes : Milieux agricoles, aquatiques, anthropiques, boisés, humides ainsi que les friches et les sols dénudés. La cartographie de l’occupation du sol des Basses-terres du Saint-Laurent est ainsi principalement basée sur un regroupement et une bonification des meilleurs produits existants pour chacune des thématiques.
