Vector grid system for Quebec spatial data infrastructure
The vector grid system provides a spatial and statistical infrastructure that enables the integration of environmental and socio-economic data. Its operation allows the crossing of different spatial data within the same grid units. Project results obtained using this grid system can be more easily linked. This grid system forms the geographic and statistical infrastructure of the [Southern Quebec Land Accounts] (http://www.stat.gouv.qc.ca/statistiques/environnement/comptes-terre-meridional.html) from the Institut de la statistique du Québec (ISQ). He forms the geospatial and statistical context for the development of an ecosystem accounting in Quebec. **In order to improve the vector grid system and the Southern Quebec Land Accounts and to better anticipate future user needs, we would like to be informed of their use (scope, use objectives, territory, association with other products, etc.). You can write to us at: maxime.keith@stat.gouv.qc.ca **. This grid system allows the spatial integration of various data relating, for example, to human populations, the economy or the characteristics of the land. The ISQ wishes to encourage the use of this system in projects that require the integration of multiple data sources, the analysis of data at different spatial scales and the tracking of data over time. The fixed geographical references of the grids simplify the compilation of statistics according to different territorial divisions and facilitate the monitoring of changes over time. In particular, the grid system promotes consistency of data at the provincial level. The spatial intersection of the grid and the spatial data layer to be integrated allows the underlying information of the layer to be carried into each cell in the grid. In the case of the Southern Quebec Land Accounts, the spatial intersection of the grid and each of the two land cover layers (1990s and 2000s) allowed the dominant cover to be carried over within each grid cell. The set of [Southern Quebec Land Accounts matrix files] (https://www.donneesquebec.ca/recherche/fr/dataset/comptes-des-terres-du-quebec-meridional-changement-de-la-couverture-terrestre) is the result of this intersection. Features: The product includes two vector grids: one consisting of 1 km² (or 1,000 m side) cells, which covers the whole of Quebec, and another of 2 500 m² cells (or 50 m side, or a quarter of an hectare), which fits perfectly into the first and covers Quebec territory south of the 52nd parallel. It should be noted that the nomenclature of this system, designed according to a Cartesian plan, has been developed so that it is possible to incorporate cells at finer resolutions (up to 5 metres apart). Technically, the 50 m grid is split by CRM or part of CRM (312 parts) in order to avoid exceeding three million cells per grid part and thus facilitate geospatial processing. This grid includes a total of about 350 million cells or 875 000 km2. Format: File Geodatabase (ESRI) 50 m cell attribute information፦ unique cell code (ID_M50); - June 2017 municipality geographic code (CO_MUN_2017); - Quebec Ecological Framework of Reference natural region code (CERQ_NV2); - coverage class codes for the beginning (t0) and end (t1) period (CL_COUV_T00 and CL_COUV_T01). Complementary entity classes: * index of parts of the grid; * division of municipalities, MRC and administrative regions of June 2017 (Source: System sur les divisions administrative [SDA] of the Ministère de l'Énergie et des Ressources naturelles [MERN]); * division of level 2 of the CERQ (Source: Ministère de l'Environnement et de la Fight contre les climate change [MDDELCC]). Geospatial processes that come with the grid: + ArcGIS ModelBuilder allowing spatial intersection and selection of the dominant value of the geographic layer to populate the grid; + ModelBuilder enabling statistical compilation of results across different clippings. Additional information on the grid in the report [Southern Quebec Land Accounts] (www.stat.gouv.qc.ca/statistics/environment/accounts-meridional.pdf #page =46) published in October 2018 (p. 46).
