Surficial Geological Units, Groundwater Geoscience Program

Surficial geologic units are unconsolidated materials overlying bedrock. The dataset represents a general description of the stratigraphy and geology, including geologic unit thickness, morphology, age and rank. It features a list of the geologic unit names and types of sediment in the hydrogeological unit. While the preferred format to deliver this data is by using a shapefile and its linked attributes, this dataset can be delivered also by providing link to external data which should have at least the same properties or also by joining a georeferenced image of the map.

Surfical geology unit were reclassified according to Geological Survey of Canada standard surficial geology legend (http://dx.doi.org/10.4095/290144) when it was possible - with the understanding that some units might not perfectly match in the new classification. The original classification is kept in the dataset.

Description
Title: Creation of the surficial geology for Milk River -- Description: The Montana surficial geology paper map was converted into digital map. To do so, the map has been trace. The tracing was scanned and the noise has been removed. The paper map and the tracing were georeferenced using ArcGis. A vectorization was then applied on the tracing and the polygones were generated into a polylines which were converted into a polygone shapefile. The surficial geology was edited in the attribute table. The surficial geology classes of the three shapefiles were standardized using the Surficial Geology of Canada Legend of the Geological Survey of Canada (2014).
