- Purpose
- The purpose of this CanCoast feature class is to map the spatial variability of tidal range along the marine coasts of Canada. It is derived from tidal ranges provided by the Fisheries and Oceans Canada WebTide model. In this feature class, tidal range is defined as the difference between predicted astronomical lower low water large tides (LLWLT) and higher high water large tides (HHWLT). These terms mean the lowest and highest water levels without storm surges. Considering how nearshore currents can cause sediment transport and coastal change, erosion can be expected to be greater in regions with high tide range and less in areas with low tide range. Likewise, the joint probability of tides and surges in which storm surge flooding can be expected is greatest in regions with low tide range. This represents a situation where sensitivity to coastal change is high at both low and high tidal ranges, with minor sensitivity occurring at medium tidal ranges (2-6 m). This feature class represents the relationship of tides, storm surge inundation, and erosion by assigning high scores to both high and low tide ranges and low scores to medium tide ranges. By quantifying the tide range along Canada's marine coasts, this feature class contributes to the calculations of Canada's coastal flooding and erosion sensitivity in a changing climate.
