Adminstrativa enheter består av län och kommuner. Gränser visar läns och kommuners utbredning. Län består av ett antal kommuner. Utbredningen och därmed gränserna beslutas av Regeringen. Kommuner och därmed läns utbredning bestämdes vid kommunreformen 1971. Länens indelningar har en lång historia. Västra Götalands län och Skåne län har bildats vid två större sammanslagningar av län. Mindre justeringar av kommungränser, nybildande eller sammanslagningar av kommuner sker då och då efter regeringsbeslut.

Administrative units consist of counties and municipalities. Boundary shows the county and municipalities outer limitation. Counties consists of a number of municipalities. The boundaries are decided by the Government. Municipalities and thereby the area of the counties were decided at the municipal reform in 1971. Counties divisions has a long history. Minor adjustments to the municipal boundaries, the establishment or a merger of municipalities occurs occasionally after a government decision.
