Chemicals Management Plan: Wildlife Monitoring and Surveillance Program

The Chemicals Management Plan (CMP) Wildlife Monitoring and Surveillance Program is a long-established federal initiative that evaluates contaminant exposure in terrestrial and aquatic-associated wildlife across Canada.

Biological samples, collected throughout the years from various locations nationwide, are preserved in long-term specimen banks under controlled conditions. These stored samples support retrospective analyses and ongoing research funded by federally mandated programs, such as the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (GLWQA) and the CMP.

Specimens are analyzed for a wide range of chemicals of concern under these programs, including trace metals, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Supplemental Information

The Chemicals Management Plan (CMP) is a Government of Canada initiative aimed at reducing the risks posed by chemicals to Canadians and their environment. A key element of the Chemicals Management Plan is the monitoring and surveillance of levels of harmful chemicals in Canadians and their environment. Monitoring and surveillance are essential to identify and track exposure to hazards in the environment and associated health implications. Monitoring and surveillance programs provide the basis for making sound and effective public health and environmental health policies and interventions, as well as measuring the efficacy of control measures.
