- Purpose
- The CanCoast Marine Shoreline Version 3.0 feature class is the marine coastline used in CanCoast analyses. It was developed from CanVec 9.0, an existing public digital data source derived from 1:50,000 scale topographic maps. In a small number of cases, where sections of the shoreline were not available in CanVec 9.0 (i.e. parts of the Arctic islands), the shoreline was extracted from digital 1:250,000 scale National Topographic Database maps. CanCoast Shoreline 3.0 includes the Pacific, Arctic and Atlantic marine coasts, including islands and estuaries. In the St. Lawrence Estuary, Québec City is used as the western extent of marine influence. In smaller estuaries, non-tidal rivers are included in this version to avoid excluding the upper reaches of tidal estuaries.

- Funding for CanCoast was provided by the Climate Change Geoscience Program of the Lands and Minerals Sector of Natural Resources Canada under the Supporting Adaptation in Coastal Regions project. Additional funding was provided by the Climate Change Impacts and Adaptations Division of Natural Resources Canada.

- Supplemental Information
- CanVec and National Topographic Database maps were provided by Natural resources Canada. This shoreline version builds on early work done by the Geological survey of Canada of Natural Resources Canada in 2012, and updated in 2017. It includes non-tidal rivers because a national DEM does not exist at the resolution needed to facilitate exclusion of non-tidal water bodies. A suitable DEM is under construction by Natural Resources Canada and, together with tidal amplitude and storm surge height estimates, it is planned that this feature class will be updated to exclude non-tidal water bodies not susceptible to storm surges.

- Description
- Some gaps were present in the CanVec 9.0 data used, therefore data from National Topographic Database 1:250,000 map was used to fill in these gaps. Split was used to cut the National Topographic Database polyline to fit into the gaps, and Merge tool was then used to combine National Topographic Database with the CanVec shoreline.
