CanCoast Coastal Sensitivity Indices Version 2.5.6
CanCoast is a geospatial database of the physical characteristics of Canada's marine coasts. It includes both feature classes that are not expected to change through time, and feature classes that are expected to change as climate changes. CanCoast includes: wave-height change with sea ice (early and late 21st century); sea-level change (early and late century); ground ice content; coastal materials; tidal range; and backshore slope. These are mapped to a common high-resolution shoreline and used to calculate indices that show the coastal sensitivity of Canada's marine coasts in modelled early and late 21st century climates.

- Purpose
- The purpose of this feature class is to calculate and map the changing sensitivity of Canada's marine coasts to changing climate. Two indices of sensitivity are provided. The first uses data representing early 21st century sensitivity and the second uses data representing late 21st century sensitivity. The difference between the early and late 21st century sensitivities giving the projected change in the sensitivity of Canada's marine coasts by 2100 is also provided.
- Credit
- Funding for CanCoast was provided by the Climate Change Geoscience Program of the Lands and Minerals Sector of Natural Resources Canada under the Supporting Adaptation in Coastal Regions project. Additional funding was provided by the Climate Change Impacts and Adaptations Division of Natural Resources Canada.

- Supplemental Information
- All input data sources were developed by the Geological Survey of Canada, Natural Resources Canada. The early and late 21st century indices were calculated from the scores of the input data using a µ -statistics approach (Morales et al., 2008; Wittkowski et al., 2004). The coastal sensitivity index (CSI) contains a score for each shoreline segment based on its coastal type and the sensitivity of that type relative to other coastal types. The change in sensitivity is the early 21st century CSI subtracted from the late 21st century CSI. Additional information are available through GeoScan. Morales, J.F., Song, T., Auerbach, A.D., and Wittkowski, K.M., 2008. Phenotyping genetic diseases using an extension of μ-scores for Multivariate Data.
