Borearkivet blev oprettet i medfør af Vandforsyningsloven af 1926 med det formål at registrere og bevare oplysninger om grundvand og geologiske forhold. Arkivet opbevarer dog oplysninger om mange endnu ældre boringer og pejlinger. Boringer og pejlinger er registreret i den landsdækkende Jupiter database, der indeholder oplysninger om mere end 270.000 overfladenære boringer.
