Permafrost information network, geotechnical borehole database

The Permafrost Information Network (PIN) geotechnical borehole database combines existing database compilations into a standard structure. The standardized database was created to be accessible from the PIN web application as a data layer. Further information regarding data compilation can be accessed from the PIN web application.

Description
Title: PIN database compilation -- Description: The PIN geotechnical borehole database combines existing database compilations into a standard structure, similar to that of the Digital borehole geotechnical database for the Mackenzie Valley/Delta region (Smith et al. 2005). The standardized database was created to be accessible from the Permafrost Information web application as a data layer. Many fields in the original databases containing qualitative information were removed for the PIN compilation. To view all of the original information please see the original database sources.

Processing:

For all source databases:

-Converted UTM coordinates (NAD27) to Lat/Long (NAD83 CSRS) using the NRCan National Transformation tool v2 (http://webapp.geod.nrcan.gc.ca/geod/tools-outils/ntv2.php)

- Standardized all date formats to YYYY-MM-DD in tblWHO, tblTEMP_PROFILE, tblTEMPERATURE_ENVELOPES, tblACTIVE_LAYER

- Added column soil_type_2 to main database. This column is a recoded, standardized version of the original SOIL_TYPE column in the database for visual representation purposes in the online borehole viewer. The original field has been kept to preserve important sample information

Chartrand et al. (2002)

-Added prefix 'TUK' to all Tuktoyaktuk borehole names prior to entry in the main database

-Added prefiex 'NW' to all Norman Wells borehole names prior to entry in the main database

-Converted bulk density field from g/cm3 to kg/m3

-Updated USC for these databases based on the value of soil_type_2

EBA engineering (1989)

-Added suffix "_INAC" to all boreholes

Smith et al. (2005)

-Removed n= XX from PENETRAT field, changed data type to numeric

-Removed character codes in the IND_PLA to leave only numeric values

Wolfe et al. (2010)

-Converted bulk densities from kg/L to kg/m3

Smith et al. (2009)

-Converted Method column from text to Method Codes 1,2,3,4,5,6,G as specified in Smith et al. (2005)

-Removed characters from PLA_LIMIT field, converted field to numeric

If discrepancies other than conversions exist between PIN database entries and the original database source, the original database source should be considered correct.
