Um er að ræða punkt þar á þeim stöðum þar sem jökull hefur verið skilgreindur á einhverjum tímapunkti frá ca. 1890. Hverjum punkti fylgir nafn ef það er þekkt ásamt svokölluðu GLIMS auðkenni sem er alþjóðlegt auðkenniskerfi fyrir jökla.
