- Title: Creation of the WMS of radiocarbon dates -- Description: Radiocarbon dates were derived from organic samples collected through marine and coastal expeditions of the GSC (Atlantic and Pacific). For many of the coastal and early offshore dates, radiocarbon dating was conducted by a GSC radiocarbon laboratory in Ottawa that performed radiometric dating of bulk organic material. GSC Atlantic dates sent to this laboratory do not appear in this database; they are found in annual published GSC reports of dates produced in the GSC lab. Increasingly over time, radiocarbon dating was performed by university or private laboratories using either radiometric dating or Accelerated Mass Spectrometer (AMS) dating of small single shell fragments or foraminifera. Dates reported by these laboratories were uploaded into the Expedition Database for specific station locations. Some of the radiocarbon dates included in the database have not been cited in peer-reviewed publications, so users should use their own scientific due diligence before using. Radiocarbon dates, station information and other related information were exported from the Expedition Database into a KML file format. The web mapping service was created from the data in the KML file.
