Greenland magnetic compilation (GREENMAG)

The development of the new magnetic compilation for Greenland (GREENMAG) was initiated in 2021 by the Satellite and Aerogeophysics group at Christian-Albrechts-University (CAU) in Kiel, Germany, in collaboration with GEUS as part of the ESA project GOCE+Greenland. The presented magnetic anomaly map covers all of Greenland, including the Inland Ice and adjacent shelf areas. The map is based on all available modern regional aeromagnetic surveys from Greenland and also includes satellite-based magnetic data where airborne data are not available. The purpose of the compilation is to provide a consistent regional magnetic anomaly map for use in geological interpretation and geoscientific analyses.

Supplemental Information

GREENMAG is a magnetic compilation integrating multiple aeromagnetic datasets with varying density and quality. The dataset should be used together with information about contributing datasets and data quality for detailed analyses.

If the content of the magnetic map is used in scientific contributions, it should be cited as: "Björn H. Heincke, Wolfgang Szwilius, Judith Freienstein, Jörg Ebbing, Carmen Gaina, Antonia Ruppel, Yixiati Dilixiati & Agnes Wansing (2025). Statement
Both data density and quality of the aeromagnetic datasets used vary. Modern high-resolution AEROMAG and AEM surveys have inline spacing of 200–1000 m and good to excellent data quality. The TGS-NOPEC datasets and the offshore surveys along the coast of North Greenland from BGR, GSC, AWI and/or DTU are also systematically acquired and are generally characterised by good quality data. Older datasets such as GICAS and EASTMAR were acquired without GPS positioning, and some datasets are affected by limitations related to base-station correction. Other datasets have only coarse line spacing (e.g. GAP92/92) or consist of irregularly flown profiles (e.g. ICEBRIDGE). Differences in data quality and data density have been taken into account in the compilation.
