Heat islands
Polygons representing heat islands on the ground surface. A heat island is defined by the difference in temperature observed between two surrounding environments at the same time. These temperature differences are mainly explained by the type of land use, in particular the presence or absence of vegetation cover, the degree of impermeability of the surfaces as well as the thermal properties of the materials. In some sectors, this difference can exceed 12°C.
These maps were produced as part of the monitoring of the implementation of the City of Montreal's [Climate Plan 2020-2030] (https://portail-m4s.s3.montreal.ca/pdf/Plan_climat 20-16-16-VF4_VDM.pdf), which aims in particular to improve urban planning and regulatory tools. Heat island mapping is an essential input to the analysis of vulnerability to climate change, which the City is committed to updating in order to integrate it into urban planning and mobility approaches. The publication of this data also contributes to the annual [accountability] (https://montreal.ca/articles/plan-climat-montreal-objectif-carboneutralite-dici-2050-7613) of the Climate Plan. Each year, the City of Montreal reports on the progress of its 46 actions and the monitoring of its indicators, including the area of heat islands.
