Groundwater-Surface Water Model: Carcajou Watershed

In permafrost dominated regions, a gap persists in our understanding of water resources, the influence of groundwater, and the impact of climate change at the regional scale. Regional scale modelling can help to advance the understanding of these impacts by integrating with regional climate models. For regional modelling to be tenable, ongoing development of modelling methods and conceptualizations is required. By developing a fully integrated numerical groundwater-surface water climate model using HydroGeoSphere (HGS) (Aquanty 2021) for a gauged basin within the discontinuous permafrost zone, this dataset allows the verification of existing numerical methods and the testing of various conceptualizations of integrated groundwater-surface water flow in permafrost regions at the regional scale. This work informs future modelling and forecasting of regional water resources in permafrost regimes.

Description

Source data derived from Canada1Water includes soils, landcover, bedrock and surficial geology, surface water networks, historical climate forcing including ground temperatures, liquid water flux and potential evapotranspiration and can be accessed at Canada1Water.ca

Data was downloaded for the corresponding watershed and trimmed to the model boundary as needed.

Description

Surficial thickness was assigned based on the method outlined in Smith and Lesk-Winfield (2009). A shot hole database was used to generate depth to bedrock points where the above method did not cover. A point cloud was generated using the two data sources, and the point were krigged with topography as a control within the QGIS platform.

The shot hole database can be accessed at https://doi.org/10.4095/288754

Description
To create the numerical mesh, stream network vector information from Canada1Water, along with the model boundary were input to the AlgoMesh software. Numerical grid size along the stream network, and maximum grid size were entered into the software, and the algorithm created and optimized the numerical mesh to conform to spatial controls.
