MODIS measures the remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) at 667nm. This can be used to view very high concentrations of phytoplankton in the very surface of the water.

NOAA CoastWatch distributes chlorophyll-a concentration data from NASA's Aqua Spacecraft. Measurements are gathered by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) carried aboard the spacecraft. The algorithm currently used in processing the water leaving radiance to chlorophyll concentration has not yet been accepted as science quality. In addition, assumptions are made in the atmospheric correction in order to provide the data in a timely manner.

The NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis 1 project is using a state-of-the-art analysis/forecast system to perform data assimilation using past data from 1948 to the present. Data is from NMC initialized reanalysis (4x/day). See the PROBLEMS LIST at http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/psd/data/reanalysis/problems.shtml

This is monthly atmospheric model data, 2001-2100, run #3, from the NOAA Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory's (GFDL) CM2.1 climate model, specifically: GFDL CM2.1, SresA1B (run3) 720 ppm stabilization experiment (SRES A1B) output for IPCC AR4 and US CCSP. In 2004, a new family of GFDL climate models (the CM2.x family) was first used to conduct climate research. The GFDL CM2.x models have become the workhorse model for GFDL's climate research. They are being applied to topics focusing on decadal-to-centennial (deccen) time scale issues (including multi-century control experiments and climate change projections), as well as to seasonal-to-interannual (si) problems, such as El Niño research and experimental forecasts.

NRL HYCOM 1/25 deg model output, Gulf of Mexico The HYCOM consortium is a multi-institutional effort sponsored by the National Ocean Partnership Program (NOPP), as part of the U. S. Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE), to develop and evaluate a data-assimilative hybrid isopycnal-sigma-pressure (generalized) coordinate ocean model (called HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model or HYCOM).

The main goal of this project is to develop a state-of-the-art data assimilation system that incorporates near-realtime data with which we can provide the community a high quality ocean state product. This assimilation system consists of an Ensemble Filter applied to GFDL's second generation fully coupled climate model (CM2.1, Delworth et al. [2006]). The ocean component of the coupled data assimilation (CDA) is the fourth version of the Modular Ocean Model (MOM4, Griffies et al. [2004]) configured with 50 vertical levels (22 levels of 10-m thickness each in the top 220 m) and 1° horizontal B-grid resolution, telescoping to 1/3° meridional spacing by 1° near the equator.

NOAA CoastWatch distributes near real time wind divergence data originating with wind velocity measurements from the ASCAT instrument onboard EUMETSAT's ASCAT satellite. ASCAT is a microwave scatterometer designed to measure surface winds over the global ocean. Wind velocity is processed to wind divergence by NOAA CoastWatch.
