The Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS), as part of the United States Geoscience Information Network (USGIN), provides a compilation of geologic maps from the NGCMP-09 database (http://ngcmp.usgs.gov/) covering the United States of America including Hawaii and Alaska. This Service was published by the KGS as part of the USGIN initiative to “create and facilitate discovery and access to geoscience information provided by state and federal geological surveys of the United States”. These data were compiled by the Kentucky Geological Survey. Three (3) layers included in this service are as follows: 1. GeologicUnitView is a compilation datasets containing geologic units covering the Commonwealth of Kentucky at 1:24,000 scale. The data table includes geologic name, description, lithology, and geologic history. 2. ContactView is a compilation dataset containing geologic contacts covering the Commonwealth of Kentucky at a scale of 1:24,000. The table includes contact type, positional accuracy and generic symbolizer (FGDC). Citations are included in the data set. 3. ShearDisplacementStructureView is a compilation dataset containing shear displacement structures covering the Commonwealth of Kentucky at a scale of 1:24,000. The table includes fault type, positional accuracy, and generic symbolizer (FGDC). Citations are included in the dataset.

This web map service presents a geologic map of the United States, including Puerto Rico and the offshore exclusive economic zone, but not the Pacific Island territories. Data are from the Geologic Map of North America (scale 1:2500000, Reed et al., 2005), as digitized by Garrity and Soller (2009, USGS DDS 424) and Sherrod et al. (2007) compilation of the Geology of Hawai’i (scale 1:100000). Faults (5529 features) and non-faulted contacts (17304 features) are portrayed in separate layers. Three portrayals of the geologic unit outcrops are included, based on age, lithology, and lithostratigraphy (original map units). There are 13,132 polygons in the dataset for the layer; WMS getFeatureInfo requests for the polygon layers report GeoSciML Portrayal GeologicUnitView feature properties name, description, lithology, geologic history, along with CGI URI identifiers for representative lithology and age (representative, older bound, younger bound), URI for geologic unit type, and a URI identifying the metadata record for the dataset. The five (5) layers included in this service are: 1. USA_USGIN_3M_Contacts layer includes all depositional, intrusive, or metamorphic contact between units, but not faults. 2. USA_USGIN_3M_Faults layer includes all faults (GeoSciML shear displacement structures). 3. USA_USGIN_3M_Geologic_Age is a portrayal in which units are categorized according to the representative geologic age of the unit using the ICS 2009 geologic time scale. 4. USA_USGIN_3M_Lithology is a portrayal in which units are categorized according to the representative lithology from the CGI SimpleLithology vocabulary as specified by the representativeLithology_URI property in the underlying dataset. 5. USA_USGIN_3M_Lithostratigraphy is a portrayal in which units are categorized according to the original map units defined in Reed et al. (2005). Three layers for use with SLD portrayal. These have a single solid color for polygons and a single solid line styling for lines. 6. gsmlp2.0:geologicunitview 7. gsmlp2.0:sheardisplacementstructureview 8. gsmlp2.0:contactview See metadata record http://metadata.stategeothermaldata.org/resource/4e6b8f72f7d6c3856f092c6b8501c570/html for more information on the dataset.

This service is compliant with Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards and the data within is compatible with GeoSciML portrayal view for geoscience data. The source of the data in this service is the Bedrock Geology map database and consists of mapped geologic units throughout the state of Iowa.
