The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) implemented its Independent Environmental Monitoring Program (IEMP) to verify that the public and environment around CNSC-regulated nuclear facilities are not adversely affected by releases to the environment. This verification is achieved through independent sampling and analysis by the CNSC.

Nuclear licensees operate across Canada. This includes uranium mines and mills, uranium processing facilities, nuclear power plants, research reactors, particle accelerators, and nuclear substances processing facilities. All of these facilities are licensed by the CNSC and are subject to strict regulatory oversight to ensure the safety of the public and the environment.

The objective of the Independent Environmental Monitoring Program (IEMP) is to build Indigenous and public trust in the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission's (CNSC) regulation of the nuclear industry, via an independent, technical and accessible environmental sampling program around nuclear facilities, while using CNSC resources effectively and efficiently. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) are publishing databases with effluent and environmental monitoring results from nuclear facilities located along the Ottawa River watershed as part of the Regional Information and Monitoring Network (RIMNet) for the Ottawa River Watershed Basin initiative. The facilities included are Chalk River Laboratories, Nordion Canada Inc., SRB Technologies Canada Inc., and Nuclear Power Demonstration Waste Facility. The initiative was developed to address questions and concerns expressed by members of the public and Indigenous Nations and communities about the availability of publicly accessible environmental monitoring data in the Ottawa River Watershed Basin. All of the environmental monitoring results in this dataset are below environmental quality guidelines.
